Computer equipment and programs — how to get started.

Advice and support.

  • This is a free service for people who are over 50, and living or working in Hackney.
  • The cost of computing equipment and software can be a major barrier for older people. In fact, if all you want to do is use email, browse the web and do normal word-processing, spreadsheet work, etc, there is no need to buy new equipment or new software, and no need to spend more than £200 — and it can be done for much less.
  • If you have decided to buy new hardware, you might be bewildered by the number of suppliers offering systems priced between £300 and £2000, all described by specifications that mean nothing to you. If you are confused by all the jargon or just uncertain about what to do next, consult the Silver Surfer Surgery first.
  • After you have got started, we provide continued support by phone, email and at the Silver Surgery centre.
